Question

Ubuntu question. Please answer.?

I want to download ubuntu on my windows vista laptop.
If i download it, and if i dont like it, is there a way for me to get windows vista back?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning (XP and Vista)
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi
You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.
Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.
Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.
Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Linux Mint 7 has a similar feature called mint4win and the directions given above for Wubi can be followed (mint4win is not available for Linux Mint 8)

Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux Mint 7 can also be run straight from the LiveCD without touching your Hard drive

Other Answer

Use the LiveCD to test out Ubuntu. If you don't like it, don't worry, the LiveCD does not install anything on to your hard drive.

be specific ... you wan't to download or install??
downloading means just copying the content from an external source .. namely internet or CD etc.
assuming you meand install :
yes ofcourse you can get your vista back..
and if you proceed carefully ubuntu setup will by itself recognize your windows installation and refrain itself from tampering with that. and in case you don't like it you may always format the partition containing ubuntu.
in case you end up screwing your windows installation you can always reinstall windows easily enough.
however on a personal account I would recommend you to create a backup of all your files in an external hard disk because most of the time people do screw up their system while installing linux for the first time.
and this goes for all the linux distributions available out there.
check out the links if you want to try out more distros like ubuntu.
