Question
How do you put up a firewall?
My computer is a dell, it has Windows XP home edition.
Answer
Log on to your PC computer with an account that has administrative privileges. Only administrators can control security features in the Windows operating system.
Click "Start," then "Control Panel."
Click "Switch to Classic View" link on the left side of the window if you are not already viewing the control panel in Classic View.
Double-click on the "Windows Firewall" control panel icon.
Go to the "General" tab at the top of the window.
Select the radio button next to "On (Recommended)," but make sure the "Don't allow exceptions" option is not checked. Enabling this option could impair the performance of some of your computer's programs.
Click "OK" to save the settings and enable the Windows Firewall.

It's going to take time to use it correctly, so read up on it. Zone Alarm is used a lot.
Remember a firewall is only good as the user can understand what it's saying....
The firewall will also need time to learn your computer.
step by step
1) go to wallmart and by an ax, a match, some gassoline, and a several packs of hot dogs
2) find a woodland area
3) chop down at least 30 (if not 40) large trees
4) find a secluded area away from the cops
5) stack the trees on top of another to create a large wall
6) Pour the gassoline all along the wall and light match
7) invite friends and commence wiennie roast
you can use the windows one in control panel bare in mind it is only uni directional as in later versions it is bio directional such as Vista and 7. There are 3rd party firewalls, I use Zone Alarm Pro, it costs but light on resources and very user friendly. There is a free version?
