Question

What does it mean for a mac to have a white screen with a picture of the world?

my iMac was updating when it flashed to a white screen with a picture of the globe rotating in the middle. It started up again, but I'm worried about why it happened at all.

Answer

It means you have "Network" selected in the System Preferences > Startup Disk. Go there and change the selection to your OS X system on the hard drive.
The basic UNIX system loads before OS X and can use a network connection to choose any OS X drive in the world as the startup disk. Not that you would really need to.
They do have a glass box at Apple, but it is really big and you can visit with thousands of people who pass by it every day; link below.

Other Answer

Thats Steve Jobs at work. He is basically saying he will one day rule the world. It's subliminal.

You weren't supposed to see that! Now the Apple Delta Forces are going to come to your home and whisk you away to Cupertino, where you will live out the rest of your days in a glass box.
Really though, that sounds like a screen saver that I have installed on my computer. Or it could have been an intro video to something.
