How do I write a video file to a dvd and have it be playable on a dvd player?
How do I write video files, such as .avi or .wmv files, to a blank DVD and be able to take them straight out of the computer and put them into my DVD player and have them work? Also, instead of a blank DVD, would a blank CD work if the file would fit onto the disc or do I have to use a blank DVD no matter what size the file is?

Well, to get your videos onto DVD disc which then can be viewd on your home DVD player, you need to have a DVD authoring software installed on your computer. I don't think CD will work, I never tried. CD is better for music.
Here is the guide on how to burn your videos onto a DVD disk.
Step 1 You need to have a DVD burner software installed on your computer. (I use a DVD Creator which works great for me. Highly Recommended. You may download here at: http://www.dvd-creator.org/dvd-creator/#158 Also there are many others.)
Step 2 Now you have a DVD burner software which will do the authoring job. Then launch the program, import videos into the program. Meanwhile, you can insert your blank DVD disc into your DVD burning drive.
Step 3 Burn videos onto DVD.
That's it. Quite easy, huh? Now you can view the DVD disc on your DVD player. Why not give it a try yourself. It's much easier than you might have imagined.

Download free studio. Its free and has a lot of conversion tools and is easy to use and you can choose video to dvd and click browse and as long as you know the path to find your video etc just add it and click burn or create dvd and put the dvd blank in and it is done. heres the link to the free studio, just click on the green download box.~~

Most DVD players will only decode certain formats. MPEG-2 is the most common format used for DVDs. You can burn .avi files onto a DVD, and the DVD player will see the file, but it will not know how to decode/play the files.
You must convert the files to the proper format for your DVD player to play it.
