Question

ZXCV?How did they come up with the keyboard format?

I always wanted to know about the keyboard format for the computer.
Isn't weird how the letters are not alphabetically placed?

Answer

It's the same as the typewriter, the keys were layed out that way so the typewrite keys would have less of a chance of sticking.
Dvorak is a keyboard layout for computers, but it never caught on.

Other Answer

The QWERTY keyboards was not designed for efficiency, but to actually slow typists down.
When the first typwriters were invented the hammers were prone to jamming if you typed too fast, so the keyboard was redesigned to slow the typists down.

This system was introduced first with typewriters. The old style typewriters would get jammed from key strokes that were too fast. So this system was developed and disguised as a better system that keeps the most frequently used keys on the Home Rowe closest to where your hands lay naturally. In reality it was designed to slow people down so that typewriters wouldn't get jammed. It stuck. You can however get a keyboard that is in alphabetical order as well as other formats.

Ok, so here's the deal.
The layout you're using is called the QWERTY layout. So named because QWERTY is the first six letters on the keyboard.
This layout was designed to be used with efficiency. Keys that are not used often are placed toward the outer edges while letters that are used commonly are placed toward the center. It's designed to minimize hand movement.
Also, there exists another layout for the speed demon. This is designed to be even faster and easier to use. Of course, just changing to it will be very hard but practice will make you a pro at it, which would make wpm (words per minute) speeds increase incredibly.
This other layout is called DVORAK.
